First Time Tips

Bouldering is rock climbing without using ropes or harnesses. Typically, the climbs don’t go too high off the ground. Our boulders are usually thirteen to fifteen feet tall. To climb outside, boulderers move crashpads under the climbs to pad the fall zone. In our gym, the entire floor is a giant, squishy pad.

Anyone can boulder! Bouldering is a physically demanding sport, but we’re here to help. You don’t need to have previous experience to start. We recommend children are at least 4 years old to start bouldering. All children need to be supervised by a parent or guardian while in the gym.

Our Boston location is the only Bouldering Project location with ropes! During the Intro to Climbing class, we will get you comfortable with our Auto Belays.

Wondering what to wear and what to bring on your first visit? We’ve got you covered. The only thing you need to boulder is a pair of climbing shoes and a chalk bag (to keep your hands dry). Technically, you don’t need a chalk ba,g but it will improve your climbing experience, so we highly recommend it. Bring your own shoes and chalk bag, or rent them from us. Rentals are free on your first visit.

Our walls are set with every level of climber in mind. Our entry-level circuits are designed to teach beginners how to climb in a safe, yet challenging way. We also provide Intro and Beginner level climbing classes (free for members) every week! Get your day pass to learn more about those classes!

Absolutely! We have an entire area of our gym that is dedicated to kids. However, the Intro to Climbing class offer is limited to ages 15 and up. Do you have kids 14 or under? Check out our Youth Programs.

We aim to teach youth life skills through climbing, making them great climbers…and awesome humans.

If you are planning to visit with youth, remember that bouldering is an exciting and fun sport—but it does come with risks. Any parent, guardian, or chaperone responsible for a youth must maintain direct supervision over the youth during the entirety of their visit. An adult cannot supervise more than 2 youth at a time.

The best way to experience Bouldering Project for the first time is with our Intro to Climbing class! With this class, you’ll have all day access to our space. Plus, the pass also covers rental shoes and chalk on your first visit ($6 on following visits). Follow this link to get your day pass!
