Fitness Instructor

Suz S.

I would say my background in kinesiology, group fitness, working in strength and conditioning with college athletes, and being a former athlete myself has shaped my knowledge and experience. I want my class plans to always have a “why” behind the structure and movements. But, my work as a dietitian working in non diet/ weight neutral approaches has shaped my philosophy. I aim to create workouts that are safe, fun, and effective. I want everyone who enters the fitness space to feel wanted and included. I believe that true inclusivity and accessibility comes from creating a space that allows participants to be themselves, encourages them to take risks, and respects their individual needs. I emphasize body-positive language, take each participant’s needs into consideration, and create an inviting and safe atmosphere that allows for open communication.

I’ve been moving and grooving since age 3 when I started ballet classes, and earned a BFA in Dance Performance in 2014. Then I started strength training and climbing, and soon after became a certified personal trainer through ACE. Enter SBP where I found Movement classes in 2018. Movement combined all of my favorite aspects of dance, climbing, and strength training, plus more! I love promoting human connection through learning new skills and playing in my classes.

I am a huge advocate of having a well-rounded movement practice. I teach yoga, strength and conditioning, core and myofascial release classes at SBP, and I encourage my students to come take different classes with me! I am passionate about helping folks improve their movement capacity by incorporating strength, mobility, recovery and mindfulness into their daily routines.

I think moving with other people is one of the most energizing experiences, and to have the privilege of directing and influencing that movement, feels impactful to me. Every person and body is different. We all need different things to create balance, strength, longevity, and overall health – but what we do all need is a place to belong. It’s why I love teaching groups of people – community and relationships are the best elixirs for life’s challenges. And when you get to move and sweat and laugh AND watch yourself and others grow and get stronger…I truly don’t know that there is a better experience.

My background is in sports, primarily soccer. I grew up playing soccer and volleyball competitively, long distance running, and then found weightlifting in my early 20s. Once I added weightlifting to my cardio practices, I unlocked a confidence within me that both empowered me and helped me embrace my body as it is, not for what it looks like. Yoga has been a later in life love, and I couldn’t be more grateful for a practice that frees me to slow down, notice sensations, and connect to my breath as a moving meditation.

Really – I just love moving in all ways. My goal now is to share that love with as many people as I can, along with move my own body with enjoyment and longevity in mind.
